Prevention is better than cure. It's also a lot cheaper too. Getting your windows and doors serviced annually will help to maintain them and can give the window and door hardware a longer lifespan.
If you live in a coastal area then its advisable to wash your external door handles and hinges to help slow down the damage caused by the salt, more importantly, if you have aluminium frames then these will need washing down too, if you have a window cleaner they will generally only clean the glass so it's up to you to wash down your own frames.
